I just got a Powerbook G4 OSX. My home computer is a Dell 8200 desktop Windows XP. How do I communicate between the 2 computers, So I can print and share files. Is it possible.

Yes it is possible...

set up sharing on your desktop...
then...
'connect to server' under the Go menu... type in the url of the sharing pc... as described here - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106471

It takes some trial and error. The amount of hassle depends on how you want to set it up. Do you want a shared folder on your powerbook or your desktop? Do you want your desktop to necessarily be on when you want to print from your power book? Do you already have or are you thinking of using a router or a print server? Does your printer have an available USB connection, if so just connect directly and save yourself some hassle.

Basically the results will be mixed. I have a friend that did it.

But the PC wanted to crotch punch the Mac.

I'm currently trying this wirelessly, between an Ibook and shuttle. No router. Ad-hoc works fine. Just create a wireless network on each computer with identical settings and that's that - internet connection sharing works fine. File sharing appears to be abit more complicated. I need to work Mac OS out and find out how to find it's shared folders through windows.

make sure your mac is using the same workgroup as the PC.

i believe by default macs use "workgroup" where as you likely are using something else.

go into utilities, find "directory access".

now select smb/cifs, press configure and change the workgroup to what ever you are using on the windows machine. that is of course if you don't just want to change the workgroup on the pc.

and on the subject of sharing, it is so much easier and nicer to use a router in the home. they are fairly cheap, and they can double up as your broadband modem. allows you to share net and files to more that 1 machine.

Heads up...the Mac will recognize the PC a LOT more easily than the PC will recognize the Mac. It's a pain but you can get it working though.

when this thread was first posted i'm sure the tiger OS was not as widespread as it is today. tiger (aka osX 10.4) has a lot of built-in networking that makes mac to pc much easier than pc to mac. the new OS is supposed to have active directory capability!! and it's supposed to come out very very soon Smile

Both the Mac and the PC can easily see each other and share files on the same subnet.

A guy named Joel Shoemaker has it nailed:

Hmmm... it was working!
Looks like his entire site is down. I'll give it a day to recover.

Edit:

Cool

Thanks for all of the information. Normally a Windows person, I was recently given a Mac to play with for awhile.

Do not try that link to Joel Shoemaker's site. It is gone, replaced by an aggressive web redirect.
I am going to look up some answers for this issue and test them in my office. It will be about Tiger (10.4) and XP but not Vista. Sorry for even posting that link!
