Hi,

There are warnings everywhere not to send sensitive information in plain text over the internet, but why is it dangerous -- how is it physically possible for someone to intercept the packets?

Please have a look at the 'Understanding Man-in-the-Middle Attacks' series:

Part 1 starts here.

It should give you a much better understanding of how one can compromise your plain-text data.
