Odd title i know!! Embarassed

but not sure how to describe the problem in that little box!!

group policy redirects users "my documents" to \\server\share\username

user logs on and all documents are there, no problem

rdp to the server (windows server 2003) navigate to the folder "E:\share\" and the folder is called "username" but from my windows 7 machine if i browse to \\server\share\ there is no folder called username, it's called "my documents" Confused

any ideas???

That's not a bug, that's the normal behaviour.
if you browse the share from the client it displays the "friendly" name instead of the NTFS folder name, since Windows recognises this is the folder which is the target of your redirection policy.

Can be annoying for admins, but not usually for users.

Try accessing it via a different share name (either share the same folder with a different name or share a folder one level above it). That ought to enable you to browse to the right place if you need to.

Hi adam,

Thanks for the reply, even if you browse to a higher share then drill down it still displays the friendly name, not the ntfs name, but only for some folders, not all of them...

if you rdp to the server and find the folders the ones that display the friendly names in windows 7 have a different folder icon but can't figure out why...

found out this is to do with the desktop.ini file in the users "my documents", question now is how do i prevent the desktop.ini file from bring created? i could script and schedule the deletion of all files called desktop.ini but would rather the file not be created in the first place....

Ok, thought it was fixed but seems i was wrong, the users my documents folder is still showing the freindly name for the folder even when desktop.ini is deleted...

so my problem is this...

when i browse the share instead of seeing a long list of usernames i see a long list of "documents" folders...

server is server 2003 and clients are windows 7, i'll keep looking around the net to see if i can find anything and will post more info as i can...
