One obvious suggestion is having them modify their Windows power settings to keep the computer constantly running? Not very efficient, but effective.
The wake on LAN subject has been tricky for me, I test the scenario a couple times but with little success.
I believe that some third party remote desktop applications have specifically implemented the wake on LAN feature, then again I don't know if that is an option for you.

Yes I do agree adjusting the computer power settings is obvious solution and we want to keep our computers in a sleep state for cost reasons and reducing our carbon foot print.
Its nice to know someone out is also tackling the WOL or WOW (wake-on-wan). I too have had mixed success.
We are hoping to avoid using a 3rd party software due to cost, security concerns, and user education.
