Hi I have a question! When I ping a computer name it gets an IP and when I do an nbtstat on that IP it gives a different computer name? It's something to do with the DHCP server right? I have a Windows 2003 standard server that has a role of a DHCP server. There are lots of machines that are experiencing it. What could be the impact if there is no proper resolution of ip address to hostname? Would there be networking applications not working properly? Is there something to be done not only on the server side but also on the workstation side? Any way, client machines are windows xp pro.
It is rare that you need to resolve IP to name, but disastrous if you can't resolve names to IPs
Unless you have a specific problem or fault you are trying to troubleshoot, I would not worry too much about NetBIOS, as long as more robust methods are working (DNS especially, WINS if you still need it)

Well its really a big headache especially in trying to install softwares or patches on the some PCs that require them. Could it be also that ip address leasing in dhcp is too short that the machine has no time to report to dns the new ip it gets?

I just found something on the internet saying that you need to configure the DHCP server. On the DNS tab you check the
"Enable DNS dynamic updates according to the settings below:" this is where you choose either 1.Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records only if requested by the DHCP client or 2. Always dynamically update DNS A and PTR records. Which option should be best? I would go for Option 2 as it would always update the A and PTR records. Our setup is option 1 but there are still PC that dont resolve to the correct ip. Any thoughts?
