Is it possible to synchronize samba passwords with windows 2000 password?

At the moment I have a windows 2000 domain which users authenticate on. I am in the process of setting up a samba server to act as a backup print server and a PDF server to create adobe pdf files. I need users to be automatically authentcated on the samba server when they log on to the windows domain controller. Passwords are forced to be changed every 2 months, so this would also have to be transparent across the windows and samba servers.

Clients are:

XP Pro
2000 Pro
Win 98

Is this at all posssible and if it is possible, any good pointers or HowTo's? I am pulling my hair out with google at the moment

Yes, there are some threads here regarding this.

You need to use Winbindd.

Docs are here:

No probs dude.

I wrote a guide on how to do this on Debian aswell, but I never got round to releasing it as it's not really finished yet.

I found a combination of these very useful:

I was just looking at the thread you started re the same thing. I take it you solved your problems and got this working. If so, how is it going? I would love to hear some first hand stories as it never quite works as rosy as Howto's and Man pages Sad

Yeh works well, takes a bit of doing, I haven't bothered with ACL's for the FS but that's cos I'm using Debian but I think new MDK and RH have ACL's allready.

Apart from that it's good, can have local login, ftp, ssh etc authenticated from domain account.

File shares by domain accounts and groups.

It's a good learning experience.

If you get stuck I'll pass you the guide I was writing it's pretty jumbled but it has some sense in there I think Very Happy
