How do ISP's track customers?

Before anyone asks, im not doing anything dodgy. Im making a report for uni on the topic.

I know that ISP's would log the IP address of users but how would they resolve the IP to an address?

An ISP has to keep by law a backlog of who had a certain IP on their network for a certain amount of time. (6 months to 2 years are common)

They can track you, because your modem has to be configured with either a serial number or with a username and password to establish the connection to your ISP.

For cable modems you might be interested in the DOCSIS standard. ADSL usually has a PPPoE connection with username and password.
